Digital preservation for GW1
OK folks, think about this one very carefully.
A few years back it was stated that the servers will be supported as long as there is interest for playing... understand that the decision is NOT in the hands of ANET employee's, but in the final decision coming from NC Soft's office. By now everyone knows they have a reputation for pulling support to any game that doesn't bring a profit. Once GW2 is out, it's only a matter of time before they decide if the current game gets the axe and everything you invested, payed for, built up over the course of 7 years will be erased!
I bring this up to you guys because it's a concern if you want to keep your items, your pets, or just generally want to go back to playing the game again. You have to tell the higher ups that you want this game to be preserved in some form, whether it be a full single player game download, or supported for private servers with friends to party up with.
You want to keep GW? ....or do you want to be like the rest of the consumer *****s who don't care about anything but the slab of meat that's laid in front of them? Discuss.

So you plan on playing Guild Wars for another X amount of years? Why? I couldn't care less if all my stuff and characters were wiped 2 years from now if the servers were shut down. Old game is old. Move on.

Let the "elite" leave. The new players shall inherit the world of Tyria and the economy will be stabilized. On the thought of still playing it, many people (myself included) love old games like Starcraft, Doom, Wolfenstein 3d, Age of Empires, Warcraft. I see no reason for it to just die off.

It's this idea of playing a game simply because you've invested time into it that seems totally nonsensical. Ask yourself a question: Do you play GW because you've played GW or do you play it because it's fun?
When it is decided by the "powers-that-be" that GW has run its course, I'll gladly give it up; I have enjoyed my time here but I also realize there are many other games available that I can enjoy and that a company can't bleed money just to satisfy the deluded sense of entitlement some players have.

So how can You imagine that? You wanna keep GW alive forever to show Your grandchildren Your GW account and open with them Your 54th birthday (gw char of course, not yours 54th birthaday), presents, complaining You get Mini Koss instead of rare Asian Minis?
Its the fate of all games - to get closed, wiped and forgotten.

Catastrophist. Or however you call that.
I don't think they'll be shutting it so soon. What games did NC close? They even made L2 and Aion free to play and l2 is still being a great success after all those years...they might as well adopt the same model for gw, even if it never had subs to begin with, they can always keep it alive with all those stupid micro transations like they did with those two games.
And we really don't know what will happen anyway, but it's not gonna close so soon for sure (not before a few years, after which I hope they give us char data so we can keep it as offline game, rather tha losing everything forever).

Play to have fun, to make new friends, to escape from real life for a short while.
And GW won't die after its shut down, GW2 players will always remember the original GW - always.
If you want to make something that will remain for years, stop gaming and start living.
This is just a game, have fun, enjoy, move on.

Along as the HoM calculator is linked to guild wars and guild wars 2, Guild Wars will be still around.
Regardless of this the player base wont suffer much I'd imagine servers getting reduced as most will hop over to GW2 but don't forget they're still selling this game and if I was a new player who bought it to find that after 2years the games gone bye bye I'd be very very annoyed.
This game has so much to offer still; I've been playing since 06 and I still find new stuff to do

Tell that to a very active Diablo II player base. If all Diablo II servers were shut down and all characters and items deleted overnight, people would not be best pleased...

Yes absolutely. There's alot of people out there still playing Diablo II including my gf Blizzard is a serious company and that's the reason why we're now buying Diablo III along with millions of others. As for our beloved GW1 well the game still sells, it's a fact. GW1 is -the- most beautiful MMOrpg out there even today. Not to mention it's got one of the most epic soundtracks ever I strongly believe that once hardcore GW players have tried out GW2 and realized that GW1 actually has both better graphics(except for skill animations) and gameplay than GW2 they'll come back to it

Wow, so many negative responses.
Take a look at the game market these days. It is FULL of retro, reports, remakes of classic games. When it comes to classic games GW is certain to be a king amongst them. Take a look at long since dead games like DAoC, there are plenty of people stiull playing this on private shards. To be sure, in 10 years time there are going to be a lot of peopole still wanting to play GW. Especially given that there are many undesirable aspects to GW2 that wont serve the current player base.
So yes, I would welcome any activity/plan to preserve this phenobminal game in some form for a very long time to come. Even if it's just lights-on with no support.
As for economy, that died the day of the loot nerf, you can remove trading from the game completely and I wouldn't care

True words which i 100% agree with. While ill be sad to see it go, it wont bother me to much. I was worried about it dying, ive been playing it for 7 years, but after playing Guild Wars 2, im only a tiny bit sad, GW2 is the best game ive ever freaking played.

I'm still having games from 10-20 years ago, and i'm still able to play them on my old stuff. Obviously some games lose the online part, but they're still playable on solo.. Overall, these are both games and we paid the same price for them..
At least, having some track of your old achievements ( not necessarly from Gw2 HoM) could be nice, if it's from an application or anything..
I remember they said they would freeze hero battles ladder to keep track, and it's today completly deleted... too bad

This reminds me of the time when i saw Tabula Rasa for sale in a megastore at full price...two months after it died.
But on topic: I don't think your favorite toon will pop out of existence for at least ten more years. It would be a huge bummer if it happened tough since my monklette has twelve sets of elite armor, a heavy pack filled with staves (including an envoy staff wich she pugged for relentlessly) the mandatory GWAMM and thousands of hours playtime.

Sad but true eventually GW1 will die off like everything else. In the next year or five that is the question.
I am wondering what affect the success or the lack thereof of GW2 will impact GW1 servers.

If Anet shut downs GW it would be nice to have a single player/LAN patch since GW is more of a squad based CORPG/single player than a MMORPG.
Although I don't see GW being shut in the near future.

I thin the op doesnt realise that many of the players who buy gw2 may also buy gw1 so they can get a feel of the original.
I can think of quite a few games over the last 20-30 years which players have got due to nostalgia , Duke nukem ,doom , burnout etc.
Diable 2 had players buying diablo for that reason and you may even find that after a yr of gw2 anet/ncsoft may release a pack of say all the parts for gw1 for 10 bucks - or they may even release a special pack with gw1 and gw2 together.
I do doubt after a year gw1 will be shut down
